  • Connect with alumni and professionals who signed up to be mentors for KU students.
    • Create an account on Mentoring KU – use KU single sign-on / register with your email address.
    • Search alumni by majors, keywords, organizations, or any other criteria.
    • Use the “message” function to contact the alumni for a short phone discussion to learn about career paths and ask for advice; customize the message in the system or create your own.
    • Prepare questions to ask the alumni.
    • At the end of your informational interview, ask for additional resources or contacts.
    • Send a thank you email and reflect on the experience.                                                         

Establish Connections on LinkedIn

  • Create a LinkedIn account – make sure to create a headline that uses keywords and aligns with your brand, complete the About section, and fill out Education, Experience, and Skills.
  • Connect with your classmates, instructors, colleagues, and KU career advisors.
  • Identify professionals working in careers you want to explore.
  • Review alumni for the University of Kansas for your major and list names (Search for the University of Kansas, click “Alumni”, and sort by important criteria).
  • Connect with alumni and professionals.
  • Schedule an appointment with a career advisor from the UCC to discuss your LinkedIn.

  • Review the upcoming events.
  • Download the Handshake app…
  • Prepare for a career fair – learn what to wear, say, and bring by reviewing the One Stop Prep Shop. Schedule an appointment with a career advisor from the UCC if you have any questions.
  • Attend the career fairs to introduce yourself and ask questions; do not forget to ask for business cards.
  • Send thank you messages to career fair contacts.
